Glitz Design: Admit One Photo Frame

I have shared many times just how much I love to pick up frames from the bargain bin and give them new life with papercrafting projects.  I often forget to show the orignial item so that you can get a better idea of the true before and after transformation.

Today though, I remembered!  This frame was a clearance aisle find at my local Hobby Lobby for only $2.50.  While I could probably find a bare wood frame in the crafts department for close to the same price, what I love about these ugly duckling frames is that they are painted already, including on the back around the easel.  To give this frame new life and a completely finished look, all I need to do is cover the front and embellish.  Handmade homedecor really can't get much simpler than that!

I covered the front of this frame with the Banner patterned paper from Glitz Designs' Afternoon Muse collection.  The color of the paper was a great match to the blue already painted on the frame.  I adhered the paper with Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi Medium.  After it was dry, I sanded the edges and applied Vintage Photo Distress Ink with a foam ink blending tool for a soft effect. 

The small red Peek-a-Boo clear frame from the collection matched the opening of my frame perfectly.  I adhered the overlay with thin Super Tape to the outside of the frame so that the transparency could serve as the protective layer over my photo opening.  Adhering it to the outside also created a slight shadowbox effect to the frame.

In the lower left corner, I added small bundle of posies attached to two Titles cardstock stickers from the collection.  A Glitzers Sticker behind the posies and tickets creates a nice base that anchors the embellishments to the frame.

To create the posies, I punched pieces of the sheet music Paper Layers from the collection with a Fiskars Cloud Squeeze Punch.  I gathered the lower edge of the cloud and stapled it to a thin piece of floral wire with Tim Holtz's Tiny Attacher.  I brushed the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Ink with an ink blending tool and then gave each posie a quick blast of color with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in SWAK (pink).

I adhered the two tickets to scraps of patterned paper to keep them from sticking to one another and to give them more shape and body.  I sanded each one to create a distressed effect.  I twisted the posey stems together and stapled the stems to the two tickets.  I adhered two velvet leaves to the back of the tickets and added a scrap of crinkled seam binding before adhering the cluster onto the Glitzer.

Trash to Treasure: Fun Stuff Bin

I love fun little bins to that I can use in my crafty space that I can use to organize my supplies while looking super cute!  This fun little wodden bin was a post-holiday clearance aisle find at Hobby Lobby.  It was bright orange and all about Halloween.  

With a quick re-cover with sunny yellow paper from Glitz Design's Hoopla collection, I have a fun little cheery bin for only a few dollars.

I did a simple re-cover of the outside with the cheery yellow polka-dot side of Polka.  I recovered the inside with the white side of Zebra.  I decoupaged the paper onto the bin using Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi Medium.  Once the medium was dry, I sanded the edges and brushed on Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

After I replaced the ribbon bow that came on the box, I added a fun label to the front.  Because the box was originally orange, I also recovered the bottom of the box with a scrap of Frames.

I adhered a cardstock Journaling sticker to a scap piece of paper.  I cut around the sticker leaving a very small border of paper.  I added Vintage Photo Distress Ink to the edges.  I added four round Glitzers stickers to the label and then layered white foam Thickers stickers on top to spell out "stuff".  I used Green Alpha Teeny Alpha Stickers to add the work "fun".  I used Adhesive Foam Sqaures to adhered the label to the front of the box.

The make-over took only about an hour, most of which was just decoupage drying time.  It was certainly a fast bargain make-over that adds a fun and sunny little catch-all to my space.

Trash to Treasure with Glitz Love Nest

I have shared many times how I love to take clearance aisle home decor items and give them new life with papercrafting products.  After I finish a piece and blog about it, I always think that I should have remembered to capture a quick before photo to show for a before and after comparison.  Finally today, I remembered to do just that!

This wooden hanging heart didn't start off too bad.  I found it after Valentines Day a couple of years ago for only a few dollars.  I love hearts and good deals so I snatched up several of them.  I like to stockpile good alterable items so that when the right inspiration hits I have several pieces on hand to work with.

After I peeled off the decorative sticker fromt he front of the heart, I decoupaged new paper cut to fit onto it using Claudine Hellmuth Studio Matte Multi Medium.  After the Multi Medium was dry, I sanded and inked the edges of the paper to help blend them smoothly onto the surface of the heart.

I layered several different Glitz Love Nest Cardstock Stickers and Whatnots onto each other on the face of the heart.  I sanded, and inked each piece to give them a distressed look.  I added a bit of brown Glitz Tulle and tucked in a few Glitzers stickers for an added touch.

I adhered each layer with foam squares to create extra depth and dimension.

The base piece of the collage is a Whatnot with a bingo board pattern which I trimmed slightly to fit better onto the heart.  I inked the edges and then ran the piece through my Distrezz-It-All to create a lot of wear and texture.  I also wrinkled the piece and inked over the surface.  You can't really tell in the photo because of the lighting, but I also applied Clear Rock Candy Distress Stickles over the surface of the bingo card to add some subtle glitter.  The card has a vintage image of a boy and girl at the bottom.  The blue cardstock sticker with the bird and nest was the perfect size to cover the boy and girl.

 I trimmed and cut apart the large flower from the Whatnots set to tuck in between the different layers.  I adhered a cardstock Title sticker onto a scrap piece of Love Nest Paper Layers and used a Tim Holtz Idea-ology Memo Pin to tuck it into a bit of brown Glitz Tulle that I wrapped around the layers.

To help each cardstock sticker and Whatnot take ink on the edges better, I sanded each one lightly.  I loved the way the title piece looked sanded so I skipped the ink on it.  I think leaving it un-inked made it stand out a bit from the other layers.

I really love this sticker and thought it was the perfect centerpiece to my hanging heart.  Who wouldn't enjoy a little pretty piece hanging in their workspace to remind them that they make someone happy.  I will be sending this one to my daughter who is away in college.  I hope that when she sees it it will remind her that she makes me so very happy (and proud too!).

For my second Glitz project for the month I re-covered this wooden tray to match the hanging heart.  I found the tray at Hobby Lobby on clearance for $2.80.  It was originally marked at $13.99!  The decoration in the bottom was just a piece of printed paper that was only partially glued down.  I removed as much of it as I could easily and left the rest to be covered.

 

This re-do is very simple.  I cut a new piece of paper for the bottom, inked the edges and then adhered it with Claudine Hellmuth Studio Matte Multi Medium.  I cut strips for the inside sides to add a second pattern and a bit more visual interest.  I inked the edges after cutting them to fit and then adhered them in place with Multi Medium.

I think a nice thing about this piece is that it helps illustrate that re-making pieces of home decor using your scrapbook supplies doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive.  To create this piece I used the bargain tray, two pieces of patterned paper, ink, a foam brush, and decoupage glue.  The total for the products used was under $5!  I think this tray is really attractive as it is without adding any embellishments at all.  Going simple lets this lovely patterened paper be the focus of the project.  It is the perfect showcase for that favorite pattern that you love to much to use (so it stays saved forever in your paper stash).  A decorative use like this one lets you enjoy it instead of just saving it!

Trash to Treasure: Wooden Gift Box featuring Glitz Design Hoopla

A few days after Halloween I happened to stop in Hobby Lobby for a couple of quick supplies.  If you know me, you know how I love their decor clearance.  I found this super cute wooden gift box for just $2.00.  I knew it would be super cute recovered, at at such a cheap price, it was too good to pass up.

I recovered the bottom part of the box with the green side of Frames patterened paper from the Hoopla collection by Glitz Design.  I covered the box lid with the blue side of the same paper.  I created a coordinating card from the Frame and Zebra patterned papers.  All of the edges of the box and card are inked with Black Soot Distress Ink.

The top of the box is embellished with a Hoopla Peek-a-Boo.

The lid is embellished with black and blue Tulle.

I added Crystal Stickles to the top of the clear piece over the printed letters. 

I sanded the edges on the underneath side of the Peek-a-Boo lightly and then brushed them with Black Soot Distress Ink.

I also added Crystal Stickles to the box sides to accent the pattern on the paper.

I stamped the 3x3 Hoopla clear stamp on the white side of a scrap piece of Zebra patterned paper.  I added color to the design with Copic Markers and added more sparkle with Crystal Stickles.

I cut the stamped design out and adhered it to my card from with adhesive foam squares.

For the inside of the card, I stamped the edges of a piece of Zebra patterned paper with the edges of different clear stamps from the Fancy Frames set.  I stamped and inked the edges in Black Soot Distress Ink.

Tim Holtz Design Team | Honey and Grampy Tribute Frame

I have shared many times before how I love picking up things on the clearance aisles and Hobby Lobby and giving them new life with scrappy products.  Sometimes they end up on the clearance aisle because they are pretty beat up, other times though I suspect it is more about price and original design.  This hinged double frame was originally $19.99.  For some reason {wink} it didn't sell.  I picked several of them up on clearance for just $4.00 each. 

 

I have been thinking about my sweet great-grandmother Honey a lot lately.  She was someone very dear to me and I wanted to make something special to display a photo of her.  I only have a few photos of her and this is one of my favorites.  It is her and my great-grandpa, Grampy.  He passed away when I was 5.  I don't really remember much about him, just how he loved to turn off the car on a big hill near their house in the country and coast all the way to the driveway.  It drove Honey crazy! Honey's real name was Orva.  Once when my dad was really little he called her Honey and it stuck.  Almost everyone that knew her called her Honey.  I think many people didn't even know it wasn't her real name.  I never doubted for a moment in my life that she loved me with all her heart.  What I wouldn't give for another few moments with her.  Okay, gotta talk about the project because I am getting all teared up! 

I began by disassembling the frames and covering the outside wood with Tim Holtz Idea-ology Tissue Tape.  Tissue Tape is amazing for covering grooved surfaces like the front of these frames.  It is so thin and pliable that it goes right down into the groves effortlessly.  I added Weathered Wood Distress Crackle Paint over the tape.  The bottle I used had gotten pretty thick so I added water to it.  Maybe too much water because it was a little drippy when I painted it on thick.  Whether it was the water or the surface of the tape I am not sure, but once it dried and crackled almost all of it flaked off.  I liked the effect though so I used canned air to blow off anything that was loose, added a bit of Vintage Photo Distress Ink to the edges and then sealed it all with Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi Medium. 

 

I covered the inserts for both sides with pattern paper from Tim Holtz's Lost and Found Paper Stash.  I cut a thin piece of copper sheeting to fit around the photo opening and embossed it with the Tim Holtz Texture Fades Collage Embossing Folder.  I drizzled alcohol ink onto the metal to add color.

 

In the second frame I framed the words "Honey & Grampy" typed on my old Royal typewriter in an Idea-ology Ornate Plate.  I filled the inside of the plate with Crackle Accents.

 

I embossed more copper sheeting with the December Calendar Texture Fade.  I cut out the 19 and 24, drizzled on alcohol ink, and then pieced them together to create 1924 on an adhesive foam square.  (That is the year Honey and Grampy were married.  I think the photo is from the 60s or 70s.)

 

I cut flowers from Grunge Paper (colored with Wild Honey and Weathered Wood Distress Inks) and mica sheets using the Tattered Florals Alterations die.  I layered the die cuts with Idea-ology Foliage elements that were also colored with alcohol ink.

 

The mica pieces are so super cool!  Once they are cut you can peel the layers apart and use them in super thin pieces that are very sheer or leave several layers together for a thicker more opaque look.  Depending on the light and the angle, they vary between looking silvery and perfectly clear.

 

I really love the way it all came together.  It has such a wonderful shabby and vintage feel.  I think it is a very fitting tribute to my Honey and Grampy.

Trash to Treasure featuring Glitz Design ' s Maya Collection

One of my favorite places to find things to alter is on the clearance aisle at Michaels and Hobby Lobby.  I find the best decor stuff there super cheap.  The trade off is that it is usually in pretty rough shape, but since I am going to reface it, it works out just fine for me!

When I find really good things super cheap I usually buy them all, like this fun wooden hinged case.  I found three of them, all in various states of disrepair for only a couple of dollars each!

By adding paper from the Maya collection (Polka, Stripe, and Floral) along with some ribbon, Glitzers, Teeny Alpha Stickers, and a Journaling Sticker, this little box has new life!

For a fun flower, I punched four flowers from paper (Floral) and shaped them with a stylus and foam pad to give them shape.  I then layered and adhered two together.  I added a brad to the center that I coated with Stickles and topped with a single stone from a Frosting strip.  I added two leaves cut from paper (Stripe).

To make a set, I re-faced a pink flower shaped frame that I also found on clearance.  When decorating pre-made frames, it makes super fast work to select a pre-painted frame that is a coordinating color to your pattern paper.

 

I added flowers along with a Titles sticker (matted onto paper) and a rub-on to finish the frame.

When finished, the set looks very different than they did on the clearance aisle!  Both are now ready to adorn a pretty pink princess room with Glitz style!

Trash to Treasure: Vintage Shabby Mirror

  One of my favorite things to do in papercrafting is to take something not so pretty and give it new life using scrapbook products.  I have had this ugly mirror in my stash for a while just waiting for the perfect paper to come along.  When I first saw Glitz's Vintage Love collection, I knew I had found the right paper for this mirror!

   

I began by covering the mirror with Stripe from the collection.  I added Tim Holtz Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink to the edges and then stamped with the ink on the mirror randomly using the script stamp from the Distressing Stamp Set.  

I accented the mirror with the heart diecut shape from the Vintage Image Whatnots and a few random pink Frosting stones. For additional accents, I created canvas flowers from assorted papers from the collection as well as a few scraps from the Vintage Love Paper Layers set combined with Claudine Hellmuth Studio Sticky Back Canvas.  (You can see Claudine demonstrate this technique in this video on You Tube.) Because the paper from the Paper Layers collection is very thin, I had a slight bit of residual stickiness after finishing the transfer.  To remedy that, I dusted those flowers lightly with white Perfect Pearls which gave them a nice subtle sparkle. To finish off the flowers and give them a bit of a worn and vintage feel, I frayed them slightly and brushed a bit of distress ink onto the edges.

Therm O Web is having a fun challenge on their Facebook Page in honor of Earth Day.  The challenge is to take something old into something new.  I decided to play along and took this wooden trinket box that was a little rough and gave it new life with paper, flowers, and some Therm O Web adhesive. If you read my blog regularly, you probably won't be surprised when I tell you the box is from Hobby Lobby and was a bargain from the clearance aisle for $2.00.  To begin, I popped off the crown decoration. This paper is soooo pretty!  It is "Tiptoe" from the Prima Flights of Fancy Collection.  It is two sided so the patterns you see are from the same sheet of paper. The embellishments on the lid include some of my favorites from Prima.  The skeleton leaves are sheer and silver as are the crystal sprays, both of which are from the Holiday Lights collection.  Underneath it all is an adhesive felt die cut.  The flower is from the Fairyring collection. As far as adhesives, I used Therm O Web's Mounting Adhesive sheets, Zots, and adhesive foam squares.  I cut some of the foam squares it small pieces and tucked them into the layers of the petals to give them some life so they wouldn't lay flat. I think the box turned out quite pretty, especially in comparison to where it started.

Altered Home Decor: Vintage Shabby Mirror Made New and Old

Next month I have a craft show that I will be in and will be featuring my metal art jewelry.  I have been wanting a new way to display some of those pieces and decided that a vintage shabby frame with a fabric covered bulletin board insert was what I wanted.

Yesterday I made a quick stop in my local antique mall and found this beauty for just $16.

I knew right away that I wanted to use some paint to accent the scroll work on the frame.

After cleaning the frame a bit, I painted all of the details with an assortment of colors of Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists painted on.

After the colored paints were dry, I globbed on some Tim Holtz Distress Crackle Paint in Antique Linen.  Emma came along as I was doing this and scolded me because she liked it the way it was.  It was pretty just painted but I had a vision of something else.

While the Antique Linen Crackle Paint was still wet, I gobbed on a second coat in Picket Fence.  I just added the crackle to the area where the detail work was and kind of let it streak out and thinly blend into the original paint in the spaces between the details.  I didn't want to cover the real original crackling.

After the crackle dried, the colored paint peeked through.  After this photo, I lightly brushed over the surface with a metal bristled brush to knock away the loose crackle and reveal a bit more color.

I used the original cardboard frame backing as a template for a new insert cut from thick foam board.  I covered the foam board with cotton batting and fabric pulling it tight to the back and securing it with staples.  I trimmed away the excess.

I used a piece of vintage rhinestone jewelry to add a tuft to the center of the board.

And the finished frame/memo board!  I was lucky to find a really nice oversized plate/frame stand at Hobby Lobby (50% off even!) that is the perfect fit and holds the frame nice and steady.

I love how soft and chippy it turned out.

Now I am itching to find more frames and repeat this project again for in my house.  I love how it turned out!

From my studio: Remember Photo Frame

Frame three out of four today. . . This frame is also done with paper from Graphic 45 papers from the Baby 2 Bride collection.  The metal frame is from K&Co, the ribbon is vintage, salvaged from a very old baby bonnet, and the lace is vintage handmade lace.  The eyelet lace design on the folded over section is courtesy of a Martha Stewart paper punch.  I probably don't need to even say it, but yes, the frame is another salvaged frame from Hobby Lobby.
