Ranger Designer Challenge 2012

I was really thrilled to once again be invited to participate in the Ranger Designers Challenge for CHA-W 2012.  For this year's challenge, we were each provided with a paper mache dress form and asked to use Liquid Pearls on our projects. 

The first thing I did with my dress form was to paint the base.  I used the Jenni Bowlin Ranger Paint Dabbers in Brown Sugar and Malted Milk.  After the paint was dry, I applied Vintage Photo Distress ink.  Finally, I squeezed out some Dark Chocolate Liquid Pearls onto my craft sheet and painted it on over the dried paint to create a shiny glazed finish.

I used cotton quilt batting to pad the top portion of the dress form.  I adhered it with Claudine Hellmuth Studio Matte Multi Medium.  After the Multi Medium was dry, I cut natural colored muslin to fit and again used Multi Medium to glue it in place.  

After the Multi Medium was dry, I brushed over the muslin with Vintage Photo Distress Ink to make the fabric look a bit more vintage.  Finally, I brushed on White Opal Liquid Pearls over the muslin to give it shimmer.

To embellish my dress form, I first gave her a sash made from Tim Holtz's Idea-ology Crinkle Ribbon.  I colored it yellow with Scattered Straw Distress Stain.  After drying the ribbon, I stamped it with the ruler image from the Tim Holtz Stamper's Anonymous Curiosities stamp set using Coffee Archival Ink.

At the top of the sash, a cute little blue bird cut from Grunge Board using the Mini Bird Alterations Movers & Shapers die and colored with Faded Jeans and Scattered Straw Distress Stains is perched on the shoulder of the dress form.  The bluebird has a light coat of Broken China Distress Stickles and a shiny black eye from a black Sakura Glaze Pen.  The clear star stick pins are by Maya Road.

The greenery wrapped around the sash and under the flowers is cut from Ranger's Manila Cardstock and painted with Key Lime, Ivy Green, and Avocado Liquid Pearls and then inked with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  After the Liquid Pearls and ink was dry, the edges of the leaves were accented with Crystal Ice Ice Stickles.  To create the crown for the top of the dress form, I applied a piece of Ranger Foil onto a scrap of cardstock and die cut it with the Alterations Vintage Lace Sizzlits Decorative Strip Die.

To create the Roses, I die cut Tim Holtz Core-dinations Distress Cardstock using the Alterations Tattered Pine Cone die.  I brushed each die cut with Liquid Pearls to create a shimmery glazed cardstock piece.  I used Hot Cocoa, Daffodil, and White Opal Liquid Pearls on the cardstock.  After the cardstock was dry, I inked the edges of each die cut with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  I assembled each die cut into a rose shape.  (A wood skewer and a quick drying glue like Helmar 450QD is really helpful in assembling these.) 

After the adhesive on the flowers was dry, I filled the openings of the roses with Crystal Ice Ice Stickles. 

At the bottom of the sash, I added a mini safety pin and a small scissor charm that I created with Ranger Shrink Plastic, UTEE.  The scissor stamp is from Wendy Vecchi's Studio 490 Art By Hand stamp set.

At the base of my dress form I added a banner that says "She dreams of roses in the winter" using my beloved Hero Arts Printer's Type Lowercase Stamp Set.  The banner was cut from manila cardstock with the Tattered Banner Sizzlets Strip Die and colored with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  I added two Idea-ology Mini Fasteners on each end of the banner.

I really love the finished piece.  It really symbolized a bit of me that dreams of my spring garden during a cold midwest winter.

(Note: Hot Cocoa, Dark Chocolate, Daffodil, Key Lime, Ivy Green, and Avocado Liquid Pearls are new colors that will be shipping in February.)

The Ranger Great Pumpkin Challenge

I hope you have been visiting Ranger Ink's blog this week to see all of the amazing inspiration using for craft pumpkins in Ranger's Great Pumpkin Challenge.  I have been about to bust keeping mine to myself!  I loved how it turned out and wanted to share so badly!  It is up on the Ranger blog today.  I thought I would share some additional images and details here.

The participating designers started out with craft pumpkins and each transformed theirs into a work of art!

For my pumpkin, I started out by decoupaging strips and pieces of Tim Holtz's new District Market Terminology Tissue Wrap onto the pumpkin using Cludine Hellmuth Studio Matte Multi Medium.  While the decoupage was still wet, I used an embossing stylus to work the paper down into the grooves of the pumpkin.  I let the decoupage overnight.

Once the pumpkin was dry, I sanded any places where the paper had large folds or wrinkles.  After sanding, I used an ink blending tool to add Distress inks in browns, green, and orange onto the paper.

I used a heat tool to dry the inks.  Next I sprayed the entire surface with Biscotti Perfect Pearls Mist.  I misted the stem area with Forever Green Perfect Pearls Mist.  I let the green mist sit for a bit in puddles.  Combined with the inks applied to the pumpkin already, I got a wonderful vibrant green around the stem.  After I let it soak in a bit, I again dried the pumpkin with my heat tool.

I really wanted to go for a frosty look on the pumpkin so I applied Clear Rock Candy Distress Crackle Paint to the top of the pumpkin.  I applied it so generously in fact that in a few places it dripped down the pumpkin.  I love the look so I left the drips.  I love the way they picked up color and made the drips look like "melting frost".

For leaves, I used a pumpkin leaf pattern I found online to cut four leaves from wool felt.  I stamped the felt with the Hero Arts Basic Grey Flower Dot Pattern stamp and Coffee Archival ink.  I used my heat tool to set the ink before handling it.  I sandwiched floral wire between two layers of leaves and sewed them together.  (For more details on making stamped felt leaves, check out my Stamped Felt Leaves tutorial.)  I applied Stardust Stickles with my finger to the edges of the leaves and misted them with Biscotti Perfect Pearls mist to add frost and shimmer.  

To finish off the pumpkin, I added vines with brown and green floral wire, streaming crinkled Trimmings ribbon (sorry, I dyed this a while back and don't remember which Distress Stains I used), and a tag that was covered and embellished with papers from the Tim Holtz Season Paper Stash and an Idea-ology Mini Paper Clip.

Glitz Design: Love Games Canvas

I wanted to create a canvas decor piece to highlight the fun title piece about holding hands from Glitz Design's Love Games collection.  I took my design inspiration for a layout sketch by Allison Davis at www.sketchsupport.com.

I covered my canvas with Love Games Floral for my base layer.  I used Claudine Hellmuth Studio Matte Multi Medium to adhere the paper to the canvas.  After the medium was dry, I sanded the edges of the paper on the canvas and brushed on Black Soot Distress Ink.

I cut two pieces of Love Games Polka (one 5"x7" and one 5 1/4"x7 1/4").  I adhered both pieces to chipboard, sanded the edges and applied ink.  I layered the two pieces and adhered them to the center of the canvas.  I bent a Tim Holtz Idea-ology Game Spinner in half to create clip to "hold" the Holding Hands Whatnot in place.

I added a few spritzes of Burnt Red Glimmer Mist to a white Bazzill Fabric Flower.

I moved layers of the flower and misted in between layers near the center of the flower.  The fabric wicked the color.  I love how it is mixed, with some areas still white and some different shades of red.

Above the flower I added two Whatnots and a clear Peek-a-Boo.  I sanded the edges of the Whatnots and inked them with the Black Soot ink.  I added a Glitzer sticker to the front of the Peek-a-Boo framing the number 1 design.  On the back of the Peek-a-Boo, I added red to the design with a Copic Marker and colored in the 1 with Mellow Yellow Glimmer Glaze.  I added two Tim Holtz Idea-ology Game Spinners as well.

In the upper right corner I added three 2"x2" squares of Paper Layers.  Each piece was adhered to chipboard and inked.  I added a Glitzer sticker to each following the design in the original sketch.

Vintage Image Fabric Patch Tutorial

I was recently asked to be a guest designer for Paper and Pixels, a craft ezine that features lots of articles and ideas for traditional, digital, and hybrid crafting.  I shared a tutorial for creating a fabric patch from a vintage image printed on fabric.  You'll find the tutorial below.  You can find a downloadable version of the vintage image I used on my vintage image blog HERE.

I love collecting vintage images and papergoods and love using them in my crafty projects.  Because I love both collecting and using the images, I scan all of my images and use reproductions in my projects.  A high resolution scan often looks at good as the original image, sometimes even better depending on the editing done to the image.  One of my favorite ways to use the images I scan is to print the image on fabric.  One of my favorite fabrics to print on is Claudine Hellmuth's Sticky Back Canvas.  I have made my own fabric sheets to go through the printer, but they take a pretty fair amount of prep work.  Sticky Back Canvas is nice and thick and ready to print right out of the package.  It has a nice tight canvas weave that looks wonderful when printed on.

To create a quilted looking vintage image patch, begin by editing and cropping your image to the desired size.  Once edited, simply print the image on your fabric as you would a photo. I usually print mine using the matte photo paper setting.  Allow the ink to dry on the fabric and then trim the image as needed.  On my example, my printed version is much fainter in color than my original image.  I hadn't realized my printer ink was low which resulted in a very faded print.  I actually liked the light image and decided to use it, sometimes happy accidents make the best art!

After trimming, ink the edges of the image with Distress Ink using Ranger's Foam Blending tool.  For my example, I used Broken China.  Adding Distress Ink to the edges adds a nice definition to edge and brings a new layer of color beyond the printer ink. 

A few quick spritzes of color from a spray colorant like Glimmer Mist adds a touch of sparkle and more color depth.  In my example, I used Yellow Daisy for add some sunshine like effects to my image.  When using a mist like Glimmer Mist, keep in mind that it is water based, which can affect inkjet printing and react with Distress Ink.  Use a very light application and allow it to dry before adding more layers.  If you over saturate the fabric with the mist you are more likely to get some fuzzing of your printed image.

In my example, I added a few quick spritzes of Glimmer Mist Blue Skies to accent the blue of the sky.

Cut a piece of cotton batting slightly larger than the image.  I prefer a real cotton batting over synthetic batting for both the look and feel and the ability to absorb any color added to it.

If you would like to add color to the batting, simply mist it with a colorant.  In my example, I wanted a vintage look so I misted my piece with Vanilla Breeze Glimmer Mist.

The batting is somewhat slow to absorb the color, so if you would like to lighten it, simply dab it with a dry cloth.  If you do not blot the batting you will need to allow it to air dry or dry it using a heat gun.

If you are using Sticky Back Canvas, remove the adhesive backing and place the canvas on your batting.  If you are using other fabric, place the fabric on the batting and pin in place.

Machine stitch the printed fabric to the batting.

Trim the edge of the batting just beyond the edge of the printed fabric.  For a decorative edge, use pinking shears or a decorative cutting blade.

If you like a vintage look, you can brush the edges of the batting with Distress Ink to add a bit more color variation.

To apply the piece to your project, apply liquid adhesive to the back of the batting.  I recommend Helmar 450 Quick Dry or Tombo Mono Aqua glue.  Keep the glue inside your stitched lines so that when the piece is on your final project the outer edges will be free just as if it were stitched in place.  It is hard to see in the photo, but I ran a line of adhesive along the stitching and then added lines of it through the center.  

If you would like your patch to be a little puffier, add an extra layer of batting inside the stitched space.  Adhere it in place and then add adhesive as described above.

Place the finished piece adhesive side down on your project.  In my example I added the patch to a fabric covered album but it could also be used on a layout, card, or tote bag.  Please note that this piece would not be suitable for something that would need to go through the wash or might be exposed to water.

You can treat the finished patch with a sealer like Creative Imaginations Super Sealer or Claudine Hellmuth's Multi Medium.  Both will protect the inkjet printing and added colorants. However, in my personal opinion, the piece would still not be suitable for a wearable item that would need washing.  I have used this same process to make a large fabric patch for my rolling crop bag.  I sealed my design with Multi Medium.  The piece has been rained on and stood up well.

Note: If you use the Multi Medium or another spreadable medium to seal your piece, apply the medium with a brush in a blotting and dabbing manner.  Applying it in strokes may cause some streaking in the print ink. 

After your piece is adhered to your final project, you can add embellishments to enhance the design. 

On my book, I added a cluster of paper flowers, velvet leaves, crystal sprays, glitter star sprays, and acrylic star stick pins.

In this close up, you can see the added spritzed of Yellow Daisy Glimmer Mist.  I sprayed mine so that I got droplets of color in addition to a fine mist.  Many of my old papergood have spots in the printing so getting a few spots on the image feels kind of right to me when going for a vintage feel.

Along the lower edge you can see where I added more blue with Blue Skies Glimmer Mist.  You can't see it in the photos, but the finished piece has a subtle glimmer to it thanks to the Glimmer Mist.  To me, the glimmer is less visible on fabric as compared to paper.

The book I applied my patch too is a quilted fabric covered book that I made.  The book is made of book board that is padded and covered with fabric.  It has grommets and binder rings and plain cardstock pages.

Glitz Design: Admit One Photo Frame

I have shared many times just how much I love to pick up frames from the bargain bin and give them new life with papercrafting projects.  I often forget to show the orignial item so that you can get a better idea of the true before and after transformation.

Today though, I remembered!  This frame was a clearance aisle find at my local Hobby Lobby for only $2.50.  While I could probably find a bare wood frame in the crafts department for close to the same price, what I love about these ugly duckling frames is that they are painted already, including on the back around the easel.  To give this frame new life and a completely finished look, all I need to do is cover the front and embellish.  Handmade homedecor really can't get much simpler than that!

I covered the front of this frame with the Banner patterned paper from Glitz Designs' Afternoon Muse collection.  The color of the paper was a great match to the blue already painted on the frame.  I adhered the paper with Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi Medium.  After it was dry, I sanded the edges and applied Vintage Photo Distress Ink with a foam ink blending tool for a soft effect. 

The small red Peek-a-Boo clear frame from the collection matched the opening of my frame perfectly.  I adhered the overlay with thin Super Tape to the outside of the frame so that the transparency could serve as the protective layer over my photo opening.  Adhering it to the outside also created a slight shadowbox effect to the frame.

In the lower left corner, I added small bundle of posies attached to two Titles cardstock stickers from the collection.  A Glitzers Sticker behind the posies and tickets creates a nice base that anchors the embellishments to the frame.

To create the posies, I punched pieces of the sheet music Paper Layers from the collection with a Fiskars Cloud Squeeze Punch.  I gathered the lower edge of the cloud and stapled it to a thin piece of floral wire with Tim Holtz's Tiny Attacher.  I brushed the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Ink with an ink blending tool and then gave each posie a quick blast of color with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in SWAK (pink).

I adhered the two tickets to scraps of patterned paper to keep them from sticking to one another and to give them more shape and body.  I sanded each one to create a distressed effect.  I twisted the posey stems together and stapled the stems to the two tickets.  I adhered two velvet leaves to the back of the tickets and added a scrap of crinkled seam binding before adhering the cluster onto the Glitzer.

Glitz Design: Enjoy Photo Frame

I am absolutely in love with this sunny yellow (Blocks) patterned paper from Glitz Designs Afternoon Muse collection.  It is just the perfect shade of yellow to create a cheery feeling on any project.

I used the paper to cover a purchased photo frame that I picked up on clearance.  I decoupaged the paper to the frame using Matte Multi Medium.  Once the adhesive was dry, I sanded and inked all of the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

I embellished the side of the frame with the coordinating Stripe patterned paper.  I used a paper punch to add a decorative edge and added machine stitching and ink along the edge before adhering to the frame.

I stamped a corner design in the lower right corner and added a cluster of embellishments along the side over the striped patterned paper.  I wrapped a bit of crinkled dyed seam binding around the frame (while the glass and insert was removed).  I stucked a vintage image Whatknot under the ribbon and then added layers of paper flowers.

The paper flowers are assorted papers from the collection that were cut using the Tim Holtz Tattered Florals die.  After cutting the flowers, I placed them on a foam pad and worked the surface of them with a round tip embossing stylus.  This helped shape the paper into a dome shape.  After shaping, I edged each flower with Vintage Photo Distress Ink and then coated them with Rockin on Sunshine Glimmer Glam.  Once the glam was dry, I layered the assorted flowers with gemstone brads.

The leaves were cut freehand and created the same way.  I love that because the papers are double sided you get peeks of other colors and patterns from the curved petals.

When I adhered the striped layer, I left the punched edge free from adhesive so that it would lift for the surface a bit and add an extra bit of dimension.

On a few of the die cut flowers, I cut the petals apart so that they would have a little more dimension.

I cut a single penant off of a Peek-a-Boo penant strip.  I trimmed the excess clear border from the penant and then inserted it onto a long stick pin.  I pierced the pin into cluster and added an adhesive foam square under the flag to lift it up off of the surface.

I punched a heart using a scrap of paper, inked the edges, and then topped it with a Glitzers sticker that says "enjoy".  I tucked the heart into the flower cluster and adhered it in place with and adhesive foam square.

Tutorial: Flocked Idea-ology Foliage with Sparkly Fluff

I absolutely love Tim Holtz's Idea-ology Foliage metal flowers.  I use them on tons of different projects.  To me, they are a must have staple item in your scarp inventory.  You can use them as is, bend and shape them, paint, glaze, enamel them, and ink them.  I recently got a new to me product called Sparkly Fluff made by Our Craft Lounge.  It is a combination of the super fine tinsel and the softest flocking I have ever felt.  I began wondering what it would look like on Foliage. . .

if you ask me, I think it looks awesome!  It completely transforms the pieces into puffy plush looking flowers, perfect for a touch of whimsy.

To flock the pieces, all you need are some Foliage pieces, assorted colors of Sparkly Fluff, a liquid adhesive (I used Matte Mutli Medium in the squeeze bottle), and a pair of tweezers.  I use the EK Success Tweezer Bees because I love the super fine non-stick tip and the reverse squeeze action which makes keeping hold of tiny things easy.  Matte Multi Medium is a great choice of adhesive because it dries well on metal, will dry clear, and will stay wet long enough for you to do some shaping.

Begin by coating your metal piece with adhesive.  I used a generous coat and tried to avoid filling in any of the grooved detail areas.  If you get adhesive in the grooves, use the tip of a tool (I used the tip of my tweezers) to remove it.  If you plan to bend and shape your Foliage pieces, I would recommend you do it before you apply the adhesive or wait until the flocked piece is completely dry.  If you attempt to shape it will the adhesive and fluff is wet, you may end up smashing or wiping the flocking off.

Place the piece adhesive side down into the jar of Sparkly Fluff and press the piece down.   

Lift the piece out of the fluff and tap on the back of the piece to shake off any excess.  I really didn't have much tap off and didn't have any problem with adhesive left behind in the jar. 

Run your fingers along the edges to smooth and define them.  Be aware that the adhesive may still be very wet so you may move clumps of the fluff.  If that happens, simply press it back into place.  You may use a fine edge, like the tip of the tweezers to press into the fluff to add definition.  You can also scrape it away in areas to create definition like I did here in between the two leaves.  (In the finished example above, I added the definition as shown, to the leaves on the left.  The leaves on the right were just shaped along the edges so that you could see the difference.)

You can apply the adhesive to the floral pieces on either side.  In the two finished examples above, I did the same flower, one with the adhesive on the curved side and one on the concave side.  You can see that the finished result is very similar.

If you need to add fluff to areas that are thin looking, simply add a bit more adhesive where needed and dip the area with the adhesive in the fluff. 

Shape the edges again. 

As before, use a tool to define any small detail areas, for instance the area in between the petals.

To add fluff to a brad, hold the brad in the tweezers and apply adhesive to the top and sides of the brad head.

Dip the brad into the fluff and shape.

 

Allow the pieces to dry about 15-20 minutes before shaping or assembling them.  Once dry, the fluff will be securely in place and should not come off.  You will be able to easily press the brad through the center of the flower.  I handled my pieces several times and didn't have any problems with fluff coming off.

Glitz Design: Mother Photo Frame

Today I am sharing a frame that is perfect for mother on Mother's day.  It features the gorgeous new Laced With Grace collection from Glitz Design.

I first covered a wooden box fram with the Polka patterned paper.  I used the tan side of the paper.  I inked the text clear stamp from the collection with Vintage Photo Distress ink and stamped the text image in multiple layers and directions.  I covered the lower half of the frame with the Floral print patterned paper.  I inked the torn and curled top edge before adhering it to the frame.

I used the large rose with notecard sticker as the base of my embellishments.  I cut away the note card part of the design.  I layered the scroll frame journaling sticker on top of the rose sticker.  I added two Glitzers stickers, one on top of the other to the center of the frame.

I cut a small banner strip from the notecard scrap from the rose sticker.  I used Teeny Alphas to add the word mother to the strip.  I tucked the strip under the edge of the roses and added a small straight pin to make it look like the stip was pinned to the frame.  I added a adhesive foam square to the end of the banner to lift it up off of the surface of the frame.

I also added adhesive foam squares under parts of the rose sticker to give them dimension as well.

Glitz Design: Love Games Photo Frame

The first second I saw the new Love Games collection I was totally taken with the black and white Damask pattern.  I love damask patterns and especially love them for home decor pieces.  For this frame, I recovered a clearance aisle photo frame and added ribbon and embellishments for a classic and romantic feeling.

 

I wrapped the frame in 1 3/4" wide silk taffeta ribbon that has a green and brown weave.  It changes color depending on the light.

I embellished over the ribbon with flowers in brown and green and added two skeleton leaves.  I topped the flowers with a Love Games Cardstock sticker.  I applied the sticker to a scrap of patterned paper to cover the adhesive and to add a little more structure to the sticker.

I adhered the sticker onto the top of the flowers, using them to lift the sticker off of the surface and to make it the centerpiece of the design.

The skeleton leave add an interesting texture to the design.  I love that they are transparent and allow the pattern of the paper and the color of the ribbon to show through.

Trash to Treasure: Fun Stuff Bin

I love fun little bins to that I can use in my crafty space that I can use to organize my supplies while looking super cute!  This fun little wodden bin was a post-holiday clearance aisle find at Hobby Lobby.  It was bright orange and all about Halloween.  

With a quick re-cover with sunny yellow paper from Glitz Design's Hoopla collection, I have a fun little cheery bin for only a few dollars.

I did a simple re-cover of the outside with the cheery yellow polka-dot side of Polka.  I recovered the inside with the white side of Zebra.  I decoupaged the paper onto the bin using Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi Medium.  Once the medium was dry, I sanded the edges and brushed on Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

After I replaced the ribbon bow that came on the box, I added a fun label to the front.  Because the box was originally orange, I also recovered the bottom of the box with a scrap of Frames.

I adhered a cardstock Journaling sticker to a scap piece of paper.  I cut around the sticker leaving a very small border of paper.  I added Vintage Photo Distress Ink to the edges.  I added four round Glitzers stickers to the label and then layered white foam Thickers stickers on top to spell out "stuff".  I used Green Alpha Teeny Alpha Stickers to add the work "fun".  I used Adhesive Foam Sqaures to adhered the label to the front of the box.

The make-over took only about an hour, most of which was just decoupage drying time.  It was certainly a fast bargain make-over that adds a fun and sunny little catch-all to my space.
