Live in the Moment Photo Frame

I made this frame for the Tim Holtz Idea-ology booth at CHA.  I simply love the way it turned out!  It is so soft and shabby looking and features one of my favorite photos of my sweet little Emma.  It was taken the day she learned to ride her bike without her training wheels, such a sweet, sweet memory.

I used a clearance aisle box style photo frame from Target for the base.  I covered it with paper from the Tim Holtz Idea-ology Crowded Attic Paper Stash using Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi Medium.

When I re-covered the frame, I did it with one piece of paper wrapped around to the sides.  (You can see this demonstrated in a down-loadable tutorial I did for BasicGrey found here: http://blog.basicgrey.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/BG-12-Days-of-Projects-Day-4.pdf .)    I love using this technique because it keeps the pattern of the paper continuous on all each side.  After I sanded and inked the edges, I added Box Corners to each of the front corners of the frame.  I heated the corners with my heat tool and sprinkled them with Enamelware Embossing Powder to add a touch of color to them.

To embellish the frame, I first dyed two strands of Crinkle Ribbon using Broken China and Peeled Paint Distress Stains.

I used a Ranger Jenni Bowlin Malted Milk Paint Dabber to apply paint into the engraved words of a Word Band.  After the paint was dry, I used a Sanding Grip to distress the surface of the metal.

I fed the Word Band onto the ribbon and then wrapped the frame with ribbon and tied it in a knot.

I added a Wire Pin to the knot in the ribbon.

I added several different elements to create a cluster by slipping them under the Word Band and Crinkle Ribbon.

First I added an embellished Ornate Plate (see my tutorial for Enameled Idea-ology for details http://tammytutterow.typepad.com/tammy_tutterow/2012/01/tuesday-tutorial-enameled-idea-ology.html).  I inked and stitched two Chit Chat stickers to a piece of natural colored Sticky Back Canvas and placed that in the center of my Ornate Plate.  (By the way, you can die cut that to fit perfectly by using the Tim Holtz Sizzix Alterations Tag and Bookplate Die.)

I adhered the elephant sticker from the Lost and Found Salvage Stickers to a piece of cardstock.  I added a File Tab to the edge of the sticker and slipped the assembled piece behind the Ornate Plate.

Along the right side of the embellishment cluster I added an Alpha Card with the letter E.  

Finally, to finish off the cluster of embellishments, I stacked enameled Foliage pieces and adhered them into place.

I have made tons and tons of frames throughout the years and I have to say that I think this one might just be my absolute favorite one.  I absolutely love the shabby softness of it.  It is a perfect compliment to my sweet girl Emma.

Ranger Designer Challenge 2012

I was really thrilled to once again be invited to participate in the Ranger Designers Challenge for CHA-W 2012.  For this year's challenge, we were each provided with a paper mache dress form and asked to use Liquid Pearls on our projects. 

The first thing I did with my dress form was to paint the base.  I used the Jenni Bowlin Ranger Paint Dabbers in Brown Sugar and Malted Milk.  After the paint was dry, I applied Vintage Photo Distress ink.  Finally, I squeezed out some Dark Chocolate Liquid Pearls onto my craft sheet and painted it on over the dried paint to create a shiny glazed finish.

I used cotton quilt batting to pad the top portion of the dress form.  I adhered it with Claudine Hellmuth Studio Matte Multi Medium.  After the Multi Medium was dry, I cut natural colored muslin to fit and again used Multi Medium to glue it in place.  

After the Multi Medium was dry, I brushed over the muslin with Vintage Photo Distress Ink to make the fabric look a bit more vintage.  Finally, I brushed on White Opal Liquid Pearls over the muslin to give it shimmer.

To embellish my dress form, I first gave her a sash made from Tim Holtz's Idea-ology Crinkle Ribbon.  I colored it yellow with Scattered Straw Distress Stain.  After drying the ribbon, I stamped it with the ruler image from the Tim Holtz Stamper's Anonymous Curiosities stamp set using Coffee Archival Ink.

At the top of the sash, a cute little blue bird cut from Grunge Board using the Mini Bird Alterations Movers & Shapers die and colored with Faded Jeans and Scattered Straw Distress Stains is perched on the shoulder of the dress form.  The bluebird has a light coat of Broken China Distress Stickles and a shiny black eye from a black Sakura Glaze Pen.  The clear star stick pins are by Maya Road.

The greenery wrapped around the sash and under the flowers is cut from Ranger's Manila Cardstock and painted with Key Lime, Ivy Green, and Avocado Liquid Pearls and then inked with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  After the Liquid Pearls and ink was dry, the edges of the leaves were accented with Crystal Ice Ice Stickles.  To create the crown for the top of the dress form, I applied a piece of Ranger Foil onto a scrap of cardstock and die cut it with the Alterations Vintage Lace Sizzlits Decorative Strip Die.

To create the Roses, I die cut Tim Holtz Core-dinations Distress Cardstock using the Alterations Tattered Pine Cone die.  I brushed each die cut with Liquid Pearls to create a shimmery glazed cardstock piece.  I used Hot Cocoa, Daffodil, and White Opal Liquid Pearls on the cardstock.  After the cardstock was dry, I inked the edges of each die cut with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  I assembled each die cut into a rose shape.  (A wood skewer and a quick drying glue like Helmar 450QD is really helpful in assembling these.) 

After the adhesive on the flowers was dry, I filled the openings of the roses with Crystal Ice Ice Stickles. 

At the bottom of the sash, I added a mini safety pin and a small scissor charm that I created with Ranger Shrink Plastic, UTEE.  The scissor stamp is from Wendy Vecchi's Studio 490 Art By Hand stamp set.

At the base of my dress form I added a banner that says "She dreams of roses in the winter" using my beloved Hero Arts Printer's Type Lowercase Stamp Set.  The banner was cut from manila cardstock with the Tattered Banner Sizzlets Strip Die and colored with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  I added two Idea-ology Mini Fasteners on each end of the banner.

I really love the finished piece.  It really symbolized a bit of me that dreams of my spring garden during a cold midwest winter.

(Note: Hot Cocoa, Dark Chocolate, Daffodil, Key Lime, Ivy Green, and Avocado Liquid Pearls are new colors that will be shipping in February.)

Sketch Support: Design Team Blog Hop and a Bit of Vintage Love

For my project based on the sketch (which you can get in .pdf form on the Sketch Support site), I decided to use the left half of the sketch for the basis of a framed collage piece.

I began with a shadowbox style frame that was a clearance aisle find from Hobby Lobby.  I recovered the insde back and outer frame with patterned papers from Jenni Bowlin Studios Red/Black III collection using Claudine Hellmuth Studio Matte Multi Medium.  Each element of the entire project was inked using Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

I used one of the collection's journal cards to add an element for text.  I used small single letter stamps to stamp the text using Ranger Archival Jet Black Ink.  I added an Idea-ology Word Key with a bit of vintage ribbon tied around it.

To raise the different elements up to different levels, I stacked and adhered adhesive foam squares together until they were the heighth I wanted.  Placing the elements at several different heighths gives it a lot of dimension.  Each element is adhered to a piece of chipboard to give it extra stability.

I used the Tim Holtz Alterations Rosette die to cut a strip that I could fold into a dimensional border strip.  I adhered the piece to the underside of the rectangular piece above.  I embellished the section with a vintage style button by Jenni Bowlin, a strip of vintage lace, and a Trinket Pin and Type Charms by Tim Holtz.  I use a wire cutter to snip the loops of the charms so that they would look more like old typewriter keys.

I love the way the strip can be used for a ruffled border.  To fold it into a ruffled strip, I folded every third section to the opposite direction.

I dabbed Vintage Photo Distress Ink onto the plastic button down into the cracks to add some extra color and age.  I threaded it with a scrap of brown and white bakers twine (Jillibean Soup).

I absolutely love the vintage image on this journal card from Jenni Bowlin.  I pretty much made this whole project around it.  To create a clip to clip the card to the piece of covered chipboard below it, I bent a large Game Spinner in half just above the round center hole.  I used a Distrezz-It-All tool to add some really chewed up distressed effects to the paper covered chipboard piece below the journal card. 

I added a rub-on by 7gypsies to a second journal card and adhered buttons to the open area of it to create a vintage style button card.  I used the Distrezz-It-All to distress the edges of a photo journal card and tucked it into the collage behind the button card.  The photo card had a journaling block on the image that I was able to hide under the button card, making it look as though the piece is a full photo. 

I really love how by using the sketch to determine the placement of most of my elements, I really only had to think about the fun parts of the project, what papers and embellishments to use.  I love that the finished piece has so many different layers and textures.

The final touch was to wrap the edges of the frame with Tissue Tape.  This frame originally had mint green and white strips on the edges.  Because of the odd shape of the frame, covering the edges with strips of paper would have been difficult.  I gave the edge a quick coat of Claudine Hellmuth Studio Paint in Blank Canvas (white) to nuetralize the color and stripes so that they would not show through the semi-transparent Tissue Tape.  The Tissue Tape was easy to apply and added a perfect vintage finishing touch.

Sketch Support: First and Last

My second page this month for Sketch Support is based on a fabulous one page sketch.  I am finding that as I challenge myself to make more pages, single page layouts are the ones that feel right to me.    You can see the sketch that this page is based on and as well as some pages based by some of the other team members on the Sketch Support site all this week.

For this page I began with a base of Kraft cardstock.  I used smooth black cardstock for the upper portion of the page and did bands of pattern paper as directed in the sketch.  When you see the original sketch you can see that I turned it for my page.  I had my heart set on using the photos of Emma standing under the sign on this page.  If I had cropped them to be horizontal she would have been small and lost in the photo.  By turning the sketch and making those photos horizontal it is cropped in much closer and you can see more details.

A fun side note, Emma insisted on wearing the same outfit to school on the last day that she wore on the first day.  It is fun to see how differently those clothes fit her at the end of the year.  We also started a new first and last day tradition of taking her photo next to the sign outside of the school.  The little string bean grew taller but didn't gain hardly any weight!

I used BasicGrey's Ledger in white along with a green dot and yellow numbered pattern from Studio Calico.  My title is American Crafts Thickers (Honey Puffy Letter Stickers).

I dug into my stash and found blue and green chip stars that were a perfect match to my paper.  The packaging has long since disappeared so I have no idea who they are from.

I have a serious love for these small alpha stickers from Making Memories.  I find myself reaching for them all the time.  I love adding a bit of stitching to them.

I love the way the Basics collection from BasicGrey works with just everything!  It is a real staple collection to have in your scrapbook stash.

I covered a raw chipboard letter by BasicGrey with black cardstock and layered it on top of a BasicGrey Basics Take Note journal card.  I cut the tops off of two Jenni Bowlin small bingo cards with the months on on them to add to the journal card.  I lifted the whole piece up off of the page with 3D Adhesive Foam Squares.

I added a band of black cardstock over a piece of Tim Holtz Tissue Tape under the title.  I used a white gel pen to add white doodle lines to the black paper.  Along the way, each piece also got inked with Tim Holtz Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

Happiness Project: People

I am just honestly blessed with having a life that is touched by the most amazing people.  I have people near and far that truly enrich my life.  I think it is a given to say that members of your family make you happy but what I am thinking here are the people outside of family who never fail to make you laugh or bring a smile to your face.  There is the co-worker who makes you laugh until you cry despite being crazy busy at work, the beloved UPS guy who brings you the best boxes of goodies, and the old guy who is the school crossing guard that smiles and waves at every single car that goes by.  They each make my world better so I have a section just for them.  I hope that it will challenge me to think more about the impact others have on my life and how what they do makes me happy.

The bottom layer on this card is another of the Jenni Bowlin journaling cards.  It is a diploma style card.  Although the center of the card didn't really fit in with the theme of my project, the colors in the border did.  To remedy that, I simply layered a second journaling card (Crafty Secrets) over the top of the first one.  Each were distressed with the Tonic Distresser and then inked.

When I adhered the different layers, I added adhesive only to the centers of each card.  I wanted them to stay in place but still look as if they were just laying on each other held only by the staples on the journaling strip.

I added a journaling strip across the bottom of the top card.  Like all of the other cards, the text was typed on pattern paper using my typewriter.

I incorporated the same flowers as used previously as well as a green leaf trinket pin.  The base under the flowers and pin is a diecut bird shape from the Jilly Bean Soup Corrugated Shapes.  These corrugated pieces really take ink well and add a cool texture to the project.

I left the journaling strip extra long so that I could curl it so that the color on the back would show just a bit.

Happiness Project: Words

"Words are the voice of the heart".  -Confucius

Isn't that such a great quote?  I love good quotes- ones that make you have those light bulb moments or ones that say what is in your heart when you can't find the words yourself.  Sometimes it is almost as if a really great quotes find you and whisper in your ear what you need to hear, sometimes even before you even know you need to hear it.  That love of words (from the girl who once dreamed of being a writer) explains what the "words" section is all about.  It is about celebrating words by others that speak to me and my heart, quotes or phrases I happen to stumble upon that make me smile and move me.

I really love this Jenni Bowlin alphabet card.  It is so classic and vintage looking.  I am sure it must be based on a real vintage card she has found.  (Have I mentioned how much I adore Jenni's vintage treasures and style?)  The second card is from the 7g ephemera collection.  I love when two random bits from different brands go together like they were made for each other.

I layered two different small Prima flowers on top of a Jilly Bean Soup Corrugated Shape.  I added a scrap of ribbon and a Tim Holtz Trinket pin to hold my journaling strip.  On this card especially, the words being typed on my old typewriter seem especially appropriate.  It was this typewriter that as a kid I dreamed I would write a great novel on.  I laugh when I think about that now.  Can you imagine typing a whole novel on a small portable manual non-electric typewriter?

I always like to "attach" my pieces to the cards in some way.  I don't like them floating.  I want to look at the card and have it make sense that the objects are on in and staying in place.

Happiness Project: Vintage

Vintage, oh how I love anything and everything vintage.  If it is shabby and chippy and a little bit grubby it is just bliss.  When I think about things that make me happy, vintage stuff and the hunt for it certainly does.  I think I will probably end up making some cards for this section about some of the treasures I have and any new ones that come along and maybe even a card or two about any excursions to find new goodies.

I think out of all of the cards, this one may be my favorite.  I absolutely adore the sweet little vintage Valentine image on the 7g ephemera card.  Vintage Valentines and papergoods are one of my favorite things to collect so it was quite fitting to have this little card in my goody bag of supplies.

I used my Tim Holtz Tonic Distresser to give the edges of the ephemera and journaling cards and nice distressed edge.

And how cute is this mini sized milk cap?  It is a perfect center for this corrugated die cut from Jillybean Soup.

The lace on the card is more of the Websters Pages lace I used on another card.  I cut a thin strip from the wide lace to lay across the card.  I really like this particular lace because it looks so vintagey.  Since I collect vintage laces, it was really fitting to add a bit of lace to the card.

The typed text on this one is layered on a Jenni Bowlin Journaling Card.  This card about vintage just wouldn't be right without a little touch of Jenni Bowlin on it.  Her vintage products truly make me happy {sigh, sweet vintage paper bliss}.

Happiness Project: Favorite Things

Yesterday I shared with you the 7gypsies Library Drawer I made and how I plan to use it in the coming year.  I shared one picture of each of the themed divider cards.  I thought it might be fun to share each one in more detail.  I will share one each day.  There are 12 cards total and with a few other things I have planned for the month, there will be something pretty to come see every day for the rest of the year!

On the post yesterday I included a supply list below the photo of each card.  I am repeating that supply list each day at the bottom of the post to make it easy for you to see what I used each day and so that you don't have to go back to that first post to see it.

First up, the front "cover" card.  Since the project is all about things that make me happy, I used the phrase "These are a few of my favorite things" from the song Favorite Things from The Sound of Music.  I love that song, it just really makes me happy. . . I guess you get the idea.

Each tab has a title using Tiny Alpha stickers by Making Memories.  I added machine stitching along the bottom edge of the letters.  I tend to use a lot of machine stitching because I love sewing.  It was one of the first craft hobbies I had.  I love the texture it adds to a paper project.

This tag cluster is made up of a Jenni Bowlin Journaling Card (yellow), a Creative Scraps Journaling Card by Crafty Secrets and a black rub-on by 7gypsies.  After applying the rub-on, I used Copic Markers to add color to the design to help tie it in with the colored design on the journaling card it is applied to.  I used my Tonic Paper Distresser to rough up the edges and then applied Walnut Stain Distress Ink.  The Distress Ink applied over the Copic Markers looks really cool and vintagey.  It really softens the colors and gives them age.

Every element (except the metal pieces) were edged with Walnut Stain Distress ink.  In the future as I add cards to the sections, I will use that same color for edging to keep a unified appearance to the project.

I like lots of stuff and lots of layers of stuff and tried to really represent that on this first card.  I let it be the bulkiest since it be at the front of the display. 

I used a bit of dyed crinkled seam binding to "tie" the optical glass to the card.

I placed the lens so that the word "favorite" would be in the center of the lens to draw extra emphasis to it.

I used a scrap of pattern paper to type part of my title on.  I used a vintage typewriter that I have in my studio.  I stapled the strip to the journaling cards.  I tried to use some of the same elements on each card like the flower with the leaf trinket pin.  To me, it helps to unify each card as part of a set.

I sanded the edges of the printed chipboard letters so that they would be a little worn and would take ink a little better.  After I placed them on the card, I brushed on Clear Rock Candy Distress Crackle Paint.  Since the letters are thin and were already on my project, I used a paint brush to dip into the crackle paint and apply it to the letters.  Using a brush smaller than the one that comes in the paint gave me more control over the application.

Happiness Project: 7gypsies Library Drawer Project

I recently had the pleasure of being invited to be a guest designer for Blue Moon Scrapbooking.  I have a serious love of all things 7gypsies and think Blue Moon has one of the best 7g selections online.  I guess it won't come as a surprise that when asked what I would like to use for my project I immediately said 7gypsies Conservatory collection.

Because I love to make "stuff" I also decided I wanted to create a project featuring a 7gypsies Library Drawer.  I really love the alterable items from 7gypsies and had really been looking forward to an opportunity to create a special project with one.

The box comes with a set of tabbed divider cards.  Last year I joined in on a One Little Word for the year.  With the new year quickly approaching I have been thinking about what my next word would be.  After a lot of thought, I finally decided it should be happiness.  With that choice I knew that I wanted to create a special project that I could use to document my focus on finding and celebrating happiness in my life.  

I decided that throughout the year I would make little art cards on 4x6 index cards that I could file in my happiness project.  I used the tabbed index cards that were included with the box to create themed sections for my drawer.  The art cards may be fancy, they may be super simple, they may even just have some hand journaling- I think it will just depend on the moment.  The goal will be to look in my life and the world around me and capture the little things that bring me happiness.

The beginning of the happiness project is the Library Drawer which I covered with the text side of the Mesofauna patterned paper.  Tucked in my goody box of supplies were some Wonderfall journaling cards by Websters Pages.  One of them had the phrase "All My Happiness" which was perfect to cut out and add to the top of the drawer pull.  I added Distress Ink (Walnut Stain) and Rock Candy Distress Crackle Paint to give it an aged effect.

I decorated each divider card with assorted embellishments to go along the card's theme.  Each card has a small strip of patterned paper with a phrase or quote appropriate to the category.  I used a vintage typewriter that is sentimental to me to create the text.
