Sketch Support: Fully Alive Art Quilt

It is one page week at Sketch Support this month.  Today I am sharing a fabric project I created based on this week's sketch.

The inspiration for this piece came from a watermark on a photo I saw on Facebook.  The photography buisiness is called Fully Alive.  I love the thought of those two words together.  This year I have been really trying to work on being healthier and trying new things, to be more fully alive.  I decided that it would be fun to make an inspiration piece to remind me of this new motto.

For this piece I used fabric to create a quilted piece.  The background fabric is plain creme muslin that I misted with Daisy Yellow and Blue Skies Glimmer Mist.  I also brushed the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

The next layer above the muslin is Sticky Back Canvas.  The next layer is printed cotton in a robin egg blue color with small brown random dots.  I love this fabric!  I found it at Joann's in their quilting fabric area.  It comes in several colors.  The top layer, the one with stamping, is Sticky Back Canvas.  Each layer of fabric has a layer of batting under it and is edged with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

On the top layer, I added several layers of stamping and colors.  I started by stenceling a branch using the Crafter's Workshop Birds of a Feather stencil with Lettuce and Meadow Adirondack Color Wash.  I added spritzed of Daisy Yellow and Blue Skies Glimmer Mist to the background.  Next, I added stamped flourishes with Vintage Photo Distress Ink and a stamp from the Tim Holtz Fabulous Flourishes stamp set and then stamped over it all with the Slight Alterations stamp set.  I followed up with my favorite Hero Arts letter stamps for the phrase which I stamped first in Vintage Photo and then a second time in Black Soot.

I added a additional color to the flourishes with my Letraset Promarkers.

The border is vintage handmade lace with a layer of plaid ribbon over the lace.  I brushed both with Vintage Photo Distress Inks.  For embellishments I added a die cut Grungpaper bird colored with Distress Stains.  I did it as a bluebird as a nod to happiness, which is my word for this year.  (Incidentally, alive was my word for last year, but it seems to keep creeping into projects this year.)  I added flowers, stars, and leave from Prima.

Sketch Support: Seriously Sweet

It is one page sketch week at Sketch Support this week (which you may have noticed, is the week I usually do, I love Alison's one page sketches!).  As one of my projects based on the sketch, I did a single photo page with one of my favorite photos of Emma.  I have shared before that I am very challenged in page making and that I made it a goal this year to make more pages.  For me, one a month is pretty good!

 

Another part of that personal challenge is to learn to make pages faster.  I tend to get way wrapped up in the process and get too elaborate.  I want to record more memories and that means sometimes being able to do quick pages.  Honestly, Emma doesn't care how fancy the page is, she is just tickled to see a page about herself.  That is why I love sketches, I can make them as elaborate as I want or as simple as I want, either way, I end up with a great page.  With this page, I only spent about 30 minutes on it, which trust me, is a real record!

I varied my page from the original sketch a bit by using a vertical photo instead of the two vertical photos.  I also switched sides between the photo and journal block.  Since Emma was facing toward the right, I felt like the photo looked better on left so that Emma was facing toward the center of the page.

For embellishments, I used these fun pinwheels by BasicGrey that cooridinate with the patterned paper.  I also used two different styles of Thickers for my title.  I also hand wrote my journaling on a small paper strip.  I am still struggling with journaling on pages.  This is a bunch for me!

Glitz Design: Love Games Photo Frame

The first second I saw the new Love Games collection I was totally taken with the black and white Damask pattern.  I love damask patterns and especially love them for home decor pieces.  For this frame, I recovered a clearance aisle photo frame and added ribbon and embellishments for a classic and romantic feeling.

 

I wrapped the frame in 1 3/4" wide silk taffeta ribbon that has a green and brown weave.  It changes color depending on the light.

I embellished over the ribbon with flowers in brown and green and added two skeleton leaves.  I topped the flowers with a Love Games Cardstock sticker.  I applied the sticker to a scrap of patterned paper to cover the adhesive and to add a little more structure to the sticker.

I adhered the sticker onto the top of the flowers, using them to lift the sticker off of the surface and to make it the centerpiece of the design.

The skeleton leave add an interesting texture to the design.  I love that they are transparent and allow the pattern of the paper and the color of the ribbon to show through.

We Were Born With Wings {fabric art journal} part 2

As promised, I am back today with some images of the inside of my book.  If you click on each photo, a larger pop up version will open in case you want a better view.  Since there were so many to share, I skipped adding several close ups.

I got several emails asking if I would be sharing how to make the book its self, and the answer is yes, of course!  I am hoping to have a tutorial and pattern available in the early part of May.

As  I mentioned yesterday, the text is the lyrics to a song called Alive by the group Superchick.  It is on my workout play list and always gets me moving.

Each page started out at plain white cardstock.  Each piece was spritzed with Walnut Gold Glimmer Mist and then inked with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  The center fold of each page was reinforced with Tim Holtz Tissue Tape.  The cardstock was a thin inexpensive cardstock that warped a lot with all of the product applied to it.  I kind of like the effect because to me it makes it look super worn.

Every page has a combination of different stamps by Tim Holtz along with the awesome Hero Arts letter stamps.

I added spritzes of color to each page with assorted colors of Glimmer Mist.

I added watercolor like accents to some of the stamped images by using a wet paint brush dipped in Distress Stain.

I added several layers of stamped image layered over each other.  I also stamped using Distress Inks so that the images would be a little less crisp.  On some images, I took a dry cloth and wiped off some of the ink from the stamp before stamping so that the image would be faded and irregular. 

I made a total goof on this page, by stamping an alphabet block on the lower right corner of the right page upside down.  I chose a really intricate design to stamp over it, which thankfully covers it pretty well.

The Slight Alterations stamp set is quickly becoming one of my favorites.  It is great for covering up and downplaying goofs.  I have always been scared of stamping directly on a project for fear of goof ups.  This stamp is totally my saving grace for goofs.

I think Daisy Yellow and Blue Skies have joined my list of "must have" Glimmer Mist colors along with Vanilla Breeze.

The branch on the bird on the branch stamp from the Urban Tapestry set is such a good branch!  I inked just the branch part and used it here and on another page.  It really compliments the branch stencil I used on the cover.

I have a serious love for the Eiffel Tower.  Visiting it and going to the top are on my bucket list.  It seemed like a perfect fit to use this stamp of it in this book.

I took the horizontal trio of butterfly images from the Papillon set and cut them apart to create three single images.  I used one of them here.

On the final text page I added one of the new Pen Nibs over a stamped image of pen nibs.

I am saving the last page for journaling.  I am debating adding a few photos in the book as well on the pages that are open.

I am planning to share the technique I use for coloring the Foliage on the cover and also a tutorial for making the book.  Look for both of those in early May.

We Were Born With Wings {fabric art journal}

I have been daydreaming of making this fabric book for a long time.  I just seemed to be bogged down with so many other things that I hadn't found a chance to sit down and do it.  Finally I did it and I am so in love with the way it turned out!

For this fabric tag shaped book, I decided to center it around lyrics of a favorite song on my workout play list.  It is a song called Alive by Superchick.  If you are curious, you can listen to it on You Tube here.  The part about "we were born with wings, we were made to fly" always sticks in my head.  I love the thought of being strong, taking charge, and using my wings to fly.  As I sat down to make this little book I decided to make it very art journal like and use the song lyrics for the text.

I started out with a tag shaped book that I made from muslin and my own pattern.  The great part of making this book from scratch is that I could stamp, stencil, spritz, and get all sorts of inky on a flat piece of fabric rather than trying to do all of that to a premade book.

I decorated the cover with several different elements.  I stamped a background using Tim Holtz's Papillon and Slight Alterations stamps with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  I added a tree branch with the Birds of a Feather stencil by The Crafter's Workshop.  I used Lettuce and Meadow Color Wash for the the green on the branch.  I added a spritz of Yellow Daisy and Blue Skies Glimmer Mist to add a bit of background color.

To embellish the branch, I colorized pieces of Tim Holtz Idea-ology Foliage with multiple colors of Distress Embossing Powders along with a touch of Ranger Bridal Embossing Powder.  I added glitter stars, velvet leaves, and crystal dangles by Prima to the clusters of flowers.  I also added a Tim Holtz Idea-ology Philosophy Tag with a Memo Pin.  I dabbed the metal tag with an Adirondack Snow Cap Paint Dabber and then melted Bridal Embossing Powder onto it.  

I took one of the black and white moth stickers from the Crowded Attic Salvage Sticker book and adhered it to a smooth piece of white cardstock.  I trimmed the moth out, cutting away the extra border space on the sticker.  Because the antenae really couldn't be cut out, I cut them off and replaced them with a thin piece of floral wire.  I also gave the moth color by using my Letraset Promarkers, which are excellent for coloring on slick surfaces like stickers.

I have a mad and serious love for these letter stamps by Hero Arts.  They are single letter wood mount stamps.  I love that they are a classic typewriter style font.  I love to stamp and make the letters akew a bit.  They seem perfectly imperfect that way.

In addition to adding the distess embossing powder to the metal leaves and flowers, I also added Distress Embossing Powder to the metal grommet that I added to the book cover.

I finished off the cover with a Tim Holtz Idea-ology Swivel Clasp embellished with a Chain Tassel, pearl Baubles, and a Pink Paislee Butterfly Garden butterfly clip and some crinkley dyed seam binding.

Tomorrow I will be back to share the inside of the book.  I think it is kind of a different look for me, kind of more random and artsy.  I can't wait to share it!

Ella Spring Training 2011 Sneak Peeks!

I thought it would be fun to show a couple of quick sneak peeks of what my Ella Spring Training classes will be about.  As the Technique Coach for Spring Training, I have three segments that will be offered during the event.

For one of my segments, I will be talking about paper piecing and sharing how to create a custom paper piecing from a photograph.  The sample above is a piecing of my house.  I love end result!

In another segment I will be talking about using stencils with mists to create your own background papers.

Finally, I will be talking about distressing and ways to alter supplies that you have on hand.  This segment is packed full of ideas!  I had to talk super fast to squeeze it all in!

I have had a peek at some of the other segments and love the ideas that the other coaches are sharing.  I think everyone who participates will come away with new ideas and ways to really add something special to their paper crafts.

Stamping + Markers = Fun.

Today I am sharing another card I made with stamps and makers.  I am working my way through a pile of cards I have on my desk to share.  I have been stamping sheets full of images and then sitting and coloring them during our evening family tv time.  I am a multi tasker so I have been really enjoying being able to sit with the family and be creative at the same time.

I used the Suzanne Carillo for Art Gone Wild "Woman" stamp set for this card.  The card is a natural colored cardstock.  I added a light spray of Tattered Angels Walnut Gold to the surface and finished the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Stain.

I stamped each of the elements on white cardstock using Ranger Coffee Archival Ink and colored them with Letraset Promarkers.  After coloring, I brushed the edges of each with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

I used two lace borders to create one doubled sided border.  I added tan velvet trim over the border and perched a little birdie on it.  I used a 3D Adhesive Foam Square by Therm O Web to adhere the birdie.

I also used two copies of the rose image to make a floral swag along the lower edge of the frame.  I used a 3D Adhesive Foam Square to raise one edge of the roses up to add dimension.

I stamped the frame image directly on the card and then added a second layer of the center part of the frame.  After coloring the inner part of the frame I added a sentiment.

I have another card to share today.  Once again I used stamps by Suzanne Carillo for Art Gone Wild and colored using Letraset Promarkers.

I used the Thanks Grace set on a natural colored card base.

After stamping the "thanks" phrase I cut it out using a craft knife.  It was totally tedius! After coloring the letters I coated them with Glossy Accents.

I stamped the leaf image on cardstock and on the card.  I tucked the super sweet bird into the cut out branch.

More stamping and coloring-

Here is another quick share today of another card I created with stamps by Suzanne Carillo for Art Gone Wild.  This card is a re-make of a page from my art journal.  I loved it so much that I decided to make a card from it.  This time I colored the images with Letraset Promarkers.

I used Glimmer Mist "Blue Skies" to add blue to the background of the image.

I really have a mad love for this banner stamp!  I can not stop using it as a sun.  I love the whimsy of it.

This cutie is my favorite little bluebird.  I want to include her on every piece!

Stamping and coloring-

My poor blog, I feel like it has been so neglected!  I have been so busy working on things that I can't share, prepping for classes, house stuff, life stuff, etc.  In the flurry of it all, I have been trying to carve out a little time to just stamp and color a bit.  I love how simply sitting and coloring in stamped images takes me back to being a kid with a coloring book and a fresh box of crayons.  

I have been creating cards with my stamping and coloring and for a self professed "non-cardmaker", I am really enjoying making them.  For this card I used stamps by Suzanne Carillo for Art Gone Wild.

I stamped two images of the heart (Love Squared) and layered them together to create some depth.

I used the Fun Notebook stamp to create a journaling square behind the heart and added the One & Only phrase stamp for the sentiment.

I added a quick mist of Glimmer Mist (S.W.A.K.) to the card blank and then stamped the Promise Flourish directly on  the card.  I stamped the fourish while the mist was still a little wet so I got a bit of fuzzing in the image.  I actually like the effect though so I decided to keep it.
