I have shared many times how I love to take clearance aisle home decor items and give them new life with papercrafting products. After I finish a piece and blog about it, I always think that I should have remembered to capture a quick before photo to show for a before and after comparison. Finally today, I remembered to do just that!
This wooden hanging heart didn't start off too bad. I found it after Valentines Day a couple of years ago for only a few dollars. I love hearts and good deals so I snatched up several of them. I like to stockpile good alterable items so that when the right inspiration hits I have several pieces on hand to work with.
After I peeled off the decorative sticker fromt he front of the heart, I decoupaged new paper cut to fit onto it using Claudine Hellmuth Studio Matte Multi Medium. After the Multi Medium was dry, I sanded and inked the edges of the paper to help blend them smoothly onto the surface of the heart.
I layered several different Glitz Love Nest Cardstock Stickers and Whatnots onto each other on the face of the heart. I sanded, and inked each piece to give them a distressed look. I added a bit of brown Glitz Tulle and tucked in a few Glitzers stickers for an added touch.
I adhered each layer with foam squares to create extra depth and dimension.
The base piece of the collage is a Whatnot with a bingo board pattern which I trimmed slightly to fit better onto the heart. I inked the edges and then ran the piece through my Distrezz-It-All to create a lot of wear and texture. I also wrinkled the piece and inked over the surface. You can't really tell in the photo because of the lighting, but I also applied Clear Rock Candy Distress Stickles over the surface of the bingo card to add some subtle glitter. The card has a vintage image of a boy and girl at the bottom. The blue cardstock sticker with the bird and nest was the perfect size to cover the boy and girl.
I trimmed and cut apart the large flower from the Whatnots set to tuck in between the different layers. I adhered a cardstock Title sticker onto a scrap piece of Love Nest Paper Layers and used a Tim Holtz Idea-ology Memo Pin to tuck it into a bit of brown Glitz Tulle that I wrapped around the layers.
To help each cardstock sticker and Whatnot take ink on the edges better, I sanded each one lightly. I loved the way the title piece looked sanded so I skipped the ink on it. I think leaving it un-inked made it stand out a bit from the other layers.
I really love this sticker and thought it was the perfect centerpiece to my hanging heart. Who wouldn't enjoy a little pretty piece hanging in their workspace to remind them that they make someone happy. I will be sending this one to my daughter who is away in college. I hope that when she sees it it will remind her that she makes me so very happy (and proud too!).
For my second Glitz project for the month I re-covered this wooden tray to match the hanging heart. I found the tray at Hobby Lobby on clearance for $2.80. It was originally marked at $13.99! The decoration in the bottom was just a piece of printed paper that was only partially glued down. I removed as much of it as I could easily and left the rest to be covered.
This re-do is very simple. I cut a new piece of paper for the bottom, inked the edges and then adhered it with Claudine Hellmuth Studio Matte Multi Medium. I cut strips for the inside sides to add a second pattern and a bit more visual interest. I inked the edges after cutting them to fit and then adhered them in place with Multi Medium.
I think a nice thing about this piece is that it helps illustrate that re-making pieces of home decor using your scrapbook supplies doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive. To create this piece I used the bargain tray, two pieces of patterned paper, ink, a foam brush, and decoupage glue. The total for the products used was under $5! I think this tray is really attractive as it is without adding any embellishments at all. Going simple lets this lovely patterened paper be the focus of the project. It is the perfect showcase for that favorite pattern that you love to much to use (so it stays saved forever in your paper stash). A decorative use like this one lets you enjoy it instead of just saving it!
