There are two parts of inspiration in this project, the first is a quote. It came to mind as I was working one day when I was sitting in my studio. I didn't know who said it or why it came to mind, but it seemed perfect to direct a project that was sitting on my desk with no direction. I had made this flower (in blue for no reason what so ever and added Rock Candy Stickle to it for no reason), had pulled paper to match, and had a label cut and colored. It all just felt like pieces and parts.
God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December. -James M. Barrie
I had a rose with snow and pieces in shades of blue that felt icy and wintry. Suddenly I had the pieces to something that would not only be pretty but also have some meaning.
The wooden box is a shadowbox that I found on the clearance aisle at Hobby Lobby. I sanded off most of the finish so that it was pure shabbiness. I covered the inside back with paper from the Tim Holtz Vintage Shabby Paper Stash. I added Stormy Sky Distress ink to the edges.
I used Tim Holtz Nostalgic Tissue Tape on the inside shadowbox sides. I brushed Stormy Sky Distress ink onto the tape using the Ink Applicator Tool.
On the outside of the box, I used a second pattern of paper from the Vintage Shabby Paper Stash using Mounting Adhesive Sheets. I added Vintage Photo Distress Ink on the edges.
The shaped rose was created using Wendy Vecchi's Clearly For Art clear molding film. I cut three flowers using the Tim Holtz Alterations Tattered Florals die. I colored the flowers using an assortment of alcohol inks in different shades of blues. I then shaped and layered the flowers using the process I show in my Shaped Roses tutorial. I then heated the piece to shape it. (I am working on a tutorial with the step-by-step instructions on making this flower. I hope to have it ready tomorrow, so be sure and check back for it if you are interested in learning to make these.)
I applied a thick layer of Rock Candy Distress Stickles on the flower in all of the areas that I felt show would collect.
The flower is adhered to a label cut from the Tim Holtz Alterations Styled Labels die. I cut two layers, one from Sticky Back Canvas and one from scrap chipboard. I used Turquoise Blue Glimmer Mist to add color to the Sticky Back Canvas. After it was dry I adhered it to the chipboard. I added stamping using a stamp from the Tim Holtz Floral Tattoo stamp set using Jet Black Archival Ink. I used Stormy Sky and Faded Jeans Distress Ink for some additional shading. I adhered it to the inside back of the box using 3D Foam Squares.
For the final touch I inked a small crinkled scrap of paper using Stormy Sky Distress Ink. I used my small single alpha stamps to stamp using Jet Black Archival. Once the ink was dry, I rubbed on a layer of Rock Candy Distress Stickles and attached it to the label using an Idea-ology Memo Pin.
That brings me to the second inspiration. I have had a really beautiful song on my mind lately that talks about the presence of God in every season. It always seems that when we are at a season's change this song comes to me and plays over and over in my mind. The song is called Every Season by Nichole Nordeman. As I was working on this project and thinking about roses in winter I began thinking about the seasons and of course this song. I love its message and the way it describes each season. It just seemed fitting to borrow the song's title and include it in the piece.
Hopefully I will have the tutorial for making the flower finished up and ready to post tomorrow so be sure to check back if you are interested in seeing how it was made.

I just wanted to post a quick thank you to everyone who downloaded my Vintage Glimmer Tag Book class over the weekend. When I posted it Friday I was a little scared that no one would download it! I am very flattered, humbled, and appreciative of the warm reception it received!
I sold out of the embellishment packs that I was offering in my Etsy store earlier today. Because I am kitting this class right now for a weekend of teaching in Springfield MO (Yay! Scrapbook Generation!!) I actually had enough supplies to put together a few more embellishment packs. They are available now in my Etsy shop Fairy Davis Paperie. If the interest in the packs continues, I may offer more of them in the near future. If you missed out on them, no worries, the class supply list has links to everything you need to make your supply shopping super easy!
I am already thinking about what class to offer next. I love writing classes so you will definitely see more classes like this one offered here.

The online version of my Vintage Glimmer Tag Book is now online and available! You can find all of the details HERE or by clicking on the photo above.
I want to give a special thank you to the team at Simon Says Stamp. They generously agreed to take the class supply list and stock the items needed for this class. You will find a supply list along with links to each supply item on the class description page. If you need to purchase supplies for this class or for any of your other creative projects, I highly recommend them!
I also have a very limited number of embellishment packs available in my Etsy store, Fairy Davis Paperie. The embellishment packs contain all of the assorted hardware and embellishments used in the class in the quantity needed to complete the project as shown. A complete list of what is included is listed in the product description on Etsy and also noted on the class supply list with an asterisk*.
I also need to say a special thank you to my sweet friend Nancy Crissinger who proofed and edited all of the instructions. She is not only a sweet, sweet person to do that, but also an amazing artist. A million thank you's to Nancy for helping make everything clear and make sense!
One last bit of information, this is the same instruction as the Vintage Glimmer Tag Book I teach in stores. If you are signed up for any of my upcoming store visits featuring this class, you will not want to purchase this download.

I have been giving some thought lately to starting a second art journal project, one that focuses on gratitude and good things. I was looking at the Glitz Design Scarlett Cardstock Journaling stickers and knew instantly that I not only needed to make that journal, but that the fun red sticker on that sheet that reads "It's going to be a good day" needed to be on the front cover.
The base of the journal is one of Glitz's new Vintage Chipboard Albums.
I layered a Paper Layers page and a Whatnots piece on the cover of the journal. I wrapped the cover of the journal with black tulle. I made a rosette with yellow tulle.
I adhered the red sticker to red patterned paper (Map). I used a red mini safety pin to clip the sticker to the black tulle.
I adhered the round sticker with the little girls on patterned paper and tucked it behind the rosette.
I added a second Whatnots (American Beauty) under the tulle. Each piece was sanded and inked with Vintage Photo Distress Ink. I used Helmar's 450 Quick Dry Glue to hold it all in place.
For the inside, I used the included pages as templates to cut new pages from plain white cardstock.

I really love Paper Layers from Glitz Design. They are book size printed papers that are lightweight, lighter weight than printer paper but heavier than tissue paper. They are perfect for using for decoupaging. For this project, I had a black wooden shadowbox frame that was pretty scratched up. It was bargain at $4 on the clearance aisle at Hobby Lobby, but in serious need of a make over!
I tore the sheets of Paper Layers from Love Next collection into strips. I used Claudine Hellmuth Studio Matte Multi Medium to decoupage them onto the front and sides of the frame.
Because the paper is so thin, it decoupages nicely over corners and edges.
Once the Multi Medium was dry, I sanded the edges to create some wear and added Vintage Photo Distress ink to the edges.
I covered the inside back insert with the pink and cream side of the Polka patterned paper. I decoupaged the Paper Layer with the bird cage in the lower left corner.
For the focal, I layered a Cardstock Journaling Sticker (the piece with the dates) on a Whatnots (the ledger print label) using adhesive foam squares. I used a scrap piece of Paper Layers and typed on it using my vintage typewriter. I added it on top of the sticker. I used a second Cardstock Journaling Sticker (Beautiful) over the typed piece using adhesive foam squares. The whole assembled piece was adhered to the frame insert using more adhesive foam squares.
I finished off with a bit of hand dyed crinkled seam binding, two little posey flowers, and two jeweled brads. Along the way, each piece gets a bit of sanding and Vintage Photo Distress Ink for a shabby and vintage touch.

And Emma couldn't be prouder!
It is the first time a project that has a photo of her in it has made it into print and she thinks it is super cool! I think it is pretty cool too! It is my first time to be included in a book (and my 4th or 5th time having something published) and seriously, could it get any better than being in a book by the awesome Becky Fleck? If you haven't grabbed a copy yet, you can find it on Amazon. Once you get yours, be sure to check out my clock on page 97.
I have to send a shout out too to the awesome St. Louis photographer Holly McCaig who shot the photos included in the project. They were our holiday family photos a couple of years ago. The two included feature my daughter Anna, my daughter Emma, my son Jacob, my niece Cora, and my nephew Joe. I love those photos so much!
Thank you Becky for including me in your amazing book!
